Some read the newspaper, we burn it

Using a thick newspaper pad to cool and shape a molten glass bubble

When we make our namesake hand blown glass plates at Broken Plates, there are a lot of specialty glass tools that allow us to cool and shape our molten glass. One of our most favorite and necessary tools is actually the humble newspaper pad!

This tool is created by stacking multiple sheets of newspaper, folding it so that it becomes very thick, and then saturating it with water so that the glass is essentially riding on a cushion of steam. We like to say it is as close to shaping the hot glass bubble with our hands as possible.

There are many different style and color options of our jewelry that are created with these hand blown glass plates. Check out a few of our favorites below from our current lines as well as our discounted and discontinued Flat Files section!
