Equipment appreciation: Molten Glass Furnace

Gathering glass out of our furnace

To create our bespoke line of Broken Plates jewelry, we use two different types of glass. Our line of Kinetic and Sculptural wearables are cut from sheets of pre-made art glass while our Simple Silhouette line of jewelry and Imagery work is cut from hand blown glass plates. And every hand blown glass plate starts with a juicy furnace full of molten glass!

A fresh gather of 2115° glass at the end of a steel working rod

These furnaces are a staple piece of equipment in any glassblowing studio. Inside the furnace, there is a crucible, or giant pot, filled with up to 1000 pounds of molten glass that reaches a toasty temperature of 2115°. At this temperature, the glass is about the consistency of honey.

Below you will find some innovative examples reflecting the potential of the molten glass inside the furnaces!
