Piecing the puzzle together

Loading up a kiln for fire-polishing

When we cut out our glass shapes for our Broken Plates jewelry, either by hand or with the water jet, this process leaves the cut edges very sharp and rough. To smooth out the rough edges of the glass, we start by grinding them with a special belt sander and then ultimately it is the technique called fire-polishing that returns the glass to its smooth and glossy state. This technique involves getting the glass hot again inside of a kiln which melts the edges just enough so that they are smooth and glossy again.

During the process of placing the glass into the kiln, we always want to utilize the space to fit the maximum amount of glass inside. This means playing a bit of kiln tetris.

This results in our contemporary art deco inspired jewelry!
