Creating a line of jewelry for the American Museum of Motion Pictures

A batch of gold leaf tile jewelry parts ready to be fire-polished in our kiln overnight

Recently, the American Museum of Motion Pictures approached us to make a line of jewelry created from the original 1930’s gold leaf tiles that they recovered from the restoration of their iconic golden building. The original was completed in 1939 and consisted of 350,000, one inch by one inch, 24 karat, gold leaf glass tiles.

During the restoration, they removed all of the damaged tiles that had decades of exposure to the elements and pollution and put up brand new 24 karat gold tiles to restore the golden luster of the exterior of their building. Lucky for us, we received all of their salvaged tiles and it was our job to kind of strip them down to just the glass and the gold. And once we removed the debris, we were able to then play with the tiles to then figure out what kind of jewelry we could make for their gift shop.

This line of glass jewelry is available through the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures shop on their website, here. Available in a variety of styles, there is always something for every occasion!
