A look into our color process

Color is an important part of our design process, and most don't know how glass color is applied in the hot shop.

The glass we gather from the furnace is clear, so any and all colors you see in our final pieces must be added to our clear bubble.

Glass color is sold in dense bars of glass. Once a usable chunk is cut, it must be heated up slowly to 'blowing temperature' to be spread over top of our clear bubble. It starts with a pre-heat in a small kiln or oven and then is picked on a punty to then heat up thoroughly in our reheating chamber.

My assistant can be seen here heating and shaping the once-solid chunk of color to a liquid enough state to 'drop' or spread it over a clear bubble. We call this a color drop.

Once dropped, we reheat the bubble to smooth, shape, and then 'cool' the glass in preparation to gather more clear glass on top of our now colorful bubble.
